Copenhagen Cultural and Media Summit Set to Spark a New Nordic Public Discourse
Severe geopolitical tensions, growing autocratic tendencies, and increasing pressure on democratic values and press freedom are reshaping the global landscape. As the world changes rapidly, the Nordic region has emerged as a pivotal political and cultural community. In response, NORD 55°—an initiative dedicated to fostering a stronger and more unified Nordic public sphere—is launching the first in a series of annual Nordic culture and media summits. On May 13, 2025, leading Nordic figures from the cultural and media sectors will gather at PRESSEN, JP/Politikens Hus in Copenhagen to set the stage for this new initiative.
NORD 55° is a joint Nordic initiative supported by some of the region’s leading media houses, including Bonnier News, Amedia, Konstsamfundet, Sermitsiaq, and JP/Politikens Hus. The ambition behind the annual culture and media summits is to establish the most significant Nordic forum for idea exchange, societal progress, and cultural development.
“If the Nordic region is to play a stronger role and stand more clearly in this time of upheaval, it is crucial that we build a more unified Nordic public sphere. To succeed, we urgently need to deepen the dialogue between Nordic cultural and media stakeholders. A stronger engagement from the cultural and media sectors is essential for achieving this goal. That is precisely why we are convening a Nordic culture and media summit,” says Stig Kirk Ørskov, CEO of JP/Politikens Hus and Chair of the Board at NORD 55°.
No one can take on this challenge alone. The reasoning is clear: only through strong, collective engagement across the Nordic region’s cultural and media institutions can we build a shared public sphere that remains resilient against the forces threatening democratic values.
“These challenges won’t resolve themselves, and the threat to democracy isn’t going away. We established NORD 55° to ensure that thought leaders from across the Nordic countries meet, connect, and engage with one another. We must shape visions for the future together—rather than in isolation,” explains Lise Bach Hansen, Head of programming Live, talks & literature, Royal Danish Library.
Together for a Shared Nordic Future
That’s why NORD 55° is now bringing together thought leaders and cultural and media executives from across the Nordic region for this pivotal first summit.
The day will feature keynote speeches, speed talks, readings, and dynamic Q&A sessions, where some of the Nordic region’s most influential voices in public debate and arts will help shape the direction for the future.

Newsletter: February 2025

Dear Reader,
If anyone had doubts about the relevance of the Nordic region right now, the beginning of 2025 has certainly dispelled them. Political winds are blowing from all directions, including towards the north, where we shiver in the winter weather. The international security conference in Munich last week left no doubt: “Europe has only itself to rely on,” wrote Ole Nyeng in Weekendavisen. For the Nordic countries, this is even clearer—we must speak with one voice. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was therefore given the responsibility of representing all of the Nordic and Baltic countries at the emergency meeting in Paris this past Monday.
However, it is impossible to write this letter without first pausing to acknowledge the school shooting in Sweden that claimed 11 lives, leaving the country, and all of the Nordic region, in deep mourning. Since then, questions have echoed: Why? Who was the perpetrator? What were his motives? Was he a lone wolf? Was he politically motivated? Was this a racist attack? Many questions remain unanswered, and some may never be answered. Yet, the ensuing discussions reveal the internal tensions Sweden—and the rest of the Nordic region—are grappling with: Who belongs? What does a welfare state encompass? These are questions that strike at the very core of what Nord 55° is concerned with.
The Nordic region is also directly threatened by its former allies. A rules-based world order, built on cross-border dialogue, has been the cornerstone and security guarantee of Nordic foreign policy. As this order now wavers, the Nordic countries are drawing closer together. The consequences of changing rules could be profound—and navigating this new course will require significant effort from all of us. Considering this, we at Nord 55° are working at full speed to finalize the program for a pre-summit taking place on May 13, 2025. This will serve as the launchpad for the much-needed Nordic public discourse.
Under the title Call to the Nordics! we will foster a pan-Nordic conversation about the untapped potential of enhanced collaboration across borders. To succeed, we must also speak truthfully about the challenges we meet. This has not been done sufficiently. More details about what to expect from the pre-summit can be found in this newsletter from project manager and initiator Lise Bach Hansen. As a subscriber, you can secure your spot early. You can also read what Stig Kirk Ørskov, another of Nord 55°’s founders, thought when he saw the photo of the Nordic leaders dining at Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s home—and hear why Kathrine Tschemerinsky, culture editor at Weekendavisen, agreed to join our board. Spring is coming, and light is returning. Happy reading.
Best regards,
Hilde Sandvik

The Nordics Are More Interesting Than Ever
The Nordics are currently attracting global interest, and for the large Finnish foundation Konstsamfundet, a Nordic perspective is absolutely central.
"Our goal is to create a larger Nordic public sphere where we can work with the core values shared in the Nordics, such as liberal democracy and our ability to discuss and debate – even with people we disagree with. We believe that is something the world needs", Lise Bach Hansen states, among other things, in the article.

NORD 55° - The first ambitious Nordic counter-response to the weakening of democracy and its institutions that we see in far too many places?
Author and former party leader and Minister of Culture Uffe Elbæk writes about NORD 55° in Altinget.
"Without the far-right media system in the USA, Trump would not have been elected. Fortunately, we in the Nordic region have an antidote", writes Uffe Elbæk in Altinget, mentioning NORD 55°, among other things.

Stage of region and NORD 55°
The newly appointed Swedish ambassador Hans Wallmark and Johan Wessmann from the Øresund Institute hosted a networking meeting at the Swedish Embassy for organizations and stakeholders in Danish-Swedish cooperation. The meeting was centered around the report 'Stage of Region,' where Lise Bach Hansen contributes with insights about the work with NORD55.
During the event, she, and Stig Kirk Ørskov had the opportunity to present the initiative to the audience.
